Cake consultations are surely one of the more enjoyable tasks of planning a wedding – who can resist cake?! Here at White Rose Cake Design we try to make the whole process as enjoyable, relaxed and fun as we can. We offer free consultations here in our kitchen.
We’ve tried to make our process really simple. Generally the happy couple come round to us, have a cuppa, try some cake and we go over what they would like for their design. We finalise the design, email a sketch and order form over and to book this needs to be signed to confirm everything is correct and sent back with a deposit to secure the booking. Over our (many) years of creating beautiful wedding cakes, we’ve got the process down to a tee – we hope!
First things first. Before you come to see us, make sure you have your wedding date and venue booked! It’s all too easy to get carried away, deciding what suppliers you would like to work with, but without these crucial pieces of information we can’t really proceed.
Try to have an idea of what kind of flavours you’d like to try, before you come. We usually provide three or four flavours free of charge for you to try. There are a list of our flavours on our website at Our Flavours, and we’re happy to accommodate if you want to try other flavours but we may make a nominal charge to cover ingredients costs to create these.
Try to have a small snack before you come for the tasting. Hunger can lead to bad choices, so make sure you’re able to taste the samples objectively!
It helps to have some idea as to what style of cake you’d like (cake, cupcakes, dessert table maybe?), and if you have mood boards, pictures or swatches from other elements in your wedding such as invitations, flowers or even the wedding dress itself, we can use these to come up with your cake design. If you use Pinterest, follow us and we can collaborate on a mood board for your wedding cake. We can take inspiration from so many aspects of your big day and incorporate these elements to make a cake that is truly personal to you.
There’s a saying that “Too many cooks spoil the broth” and it can definitely be this way when it comes to wedding cake consultations! We recommend only the happy couple come for the tasting, as too often other people’s ideas can take over and after all, it’s your wedding day so it should be your choice! If other family members are strong personalities, it can be difficult to get the flavours or style of cake that you want, and too many ideas on flavours and design can be overwhelming. Plus, we only have a small kitchen!! If you want extra samples to take home for parents/friends, of course we can arrange this for you for a nominal charge.
If you have any questions on the day, ask your cake maker! We’re generally a friendly bunch and will be happy to answer any queries you may have. Don’t forget to ask about things such as insurance, food hygiene certification and to see a portfolio of work. Any reputable baker should have details of these available for you.
Hopefully this little post will give you an insight into the process of the cake consultation, making it a slightly less daunting and more enjoyable prospect, and if you need any further information please contact us.
